Let’s Call It A Weekend!

Show love to the favorite festival films of 2012 (like BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD) nominated for the Gotham Independent Film Audience Award by voting online HERE. Trifecta of Black Films in Theaters This Weekend

The Sundance-award winning drama, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE (dir. Ava DuVernay) begins its third week expansion in 24 theaters. Visit affrm.com for theater information. For a refresher on Ava DuVernay, AFFRM and MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, here’s my post about the opening weekend release.

Veteran filmmaker Spike Lee’s latest joint, BAD 25 (a music doc about Michael Jackson’s BAD album) continues its 1-week bi-coastal theatrical run in Los Angeles to qualify for the Oscars. The film will air nationally on ABC on Thanksgiving Day. Indies in LA can also show opening weekend support to THE LAST FALL, directed by Matthew A. Cherry. I went to the premiere screening at SXSW and was moved by the tale of an athlete finding life after football.

Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowships Winners Announced

Out of over 7,000 submissions, 5 talented writers from NYC, LA, Louisiana & South Africa were awarded $35,000 on Wednesday from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to make their script into a real movie! Will you enter the Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowship next year?

CALL FOR INDIES (Employment Opportunities)

  • One of my fest favorites, YELLING TO THE SKY (dir. Victoria Mahoney & starring Zoë Kravitz) is seeking Fall marketing/social media interns based in LA.
  • Asian CineVision is seeking Film Festival Spring Interns to assist in various levels of production in NYC.
  • Got social media skills? Athena Film Festival shines a spotlight on women’s leadership in film and they’re looking for an outreach coordinator to assist in NYC from November to February.
