Oh, Them Oscar Noms!

In just 1 month and  2 weeks… THIS

The only nominated films I’ve seen from the 2013 Oscar list are mostly in the animated category. Oh, and Skyfall and Hitchcock. I’ve got my work cut out for me before watching the Oscars in February.

I have no valid opinion (yet) on which I would like to see win the Best Picture award, but I’ll provide my thoughts anyway.

Full list of nominees here.

Best Picture

  • Amour

An elderly couple must confront their love for one another when the wife suffers a heart attack and is left paralyzed on one side of her body.

Won’t Win Because: It’s a foreign film (and let’s face it, Americans can’t get used to European filmmaking)

  • Argo

Based on actual events, CIA and Canadian operatives secretly attempt to release six American fugitives from revolutionary Iran.

Could Win Because: Ben Affleck is attached, and it’s one hell of a story

  • Beasts of the Southern Wild

Hushpuppy, a young girl dealing with her ailing father who mistreats her  and a withering bayou community facing melting ice caps and weakened levees, tries to survive and sets out on a mission to find her mother.

Won’t Win Because: Even though it received a lot of praise at Sundance, it’s too independent for the Academy

  • Django Unchained

With the help of his bounty hunter partner, an ex-slave goes in search of his wife, who has been sold to a heartless Mississippi plantation owner.

Could Win Because: It has a star-studded cast and satires an important historical period

  • Les Miserables

Based on the Broadway hit set in 19th century France, the story focuses on Jean Valjean as he breaks parole and is hunted by policeman Javert for decades. Jean Valjean decides to care for a factory worker’s daughter, which affects their lives forever.

Could Win Because: It’s the first musical to ever film the actors singing live.

  • Life of Pi

A young man survives a horrific storm at sea and finds companionship in another survivor, a Bengal tiger.

Won’t Win Because: Too much hype with the 3D

  • Lincoln

Based on true events, American President Abraham Lincoln deals with The Civil War and with members of his own cabinet disagreeing with his stance on emancipating the slaves.

Could Win Because: It’s a biopic on an American president

  • Silver Linings Playbook

Pat has to adjust to normal life when he’s released from a mental institution, which proves difficult after meeting Tiffany, a girl with problems of her own.

Won’t Win Because: The other contenders fair better for the Academy

  • Zero Dark Thirty

Based on true events, the search and capture of Osama Bin Laden in May 2011.

Could Win Because: Bigelow got snubbed in the Best Directing category

Also,

Congrats to Quvenzhané Wallis for being the youngest nominee for the Oscars!
