The worst feeling as an indie just starting out is hearing there’s a great opportunity to jumpstart your career, only to find out the deadline already passed. Well get ready to mark your calendars, folks. Let’s make 2013 the year of starting, finishing AND submitting our dream scripts. 

  • Outfest Screenwriting Lab

2013 Deadline: February 11th

“What began as a screenwriting competition has expanded into a dynamic three-day, mentor-led workshop in Los Angeles for selected screenwriters. The authors of five screenplays will be invited to participate in an intensive laboratory during which they will work closely with Lab Mentors — established writers who will critique and encourage their work.To be held in June 2013, with a follow up event during Outfest Los Angeles 2013, the lab will include sessions with other industry professionals, structured career development opportunities and participation in ongoing festival events.”


  • Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Competition

2013 Deadline(s): March 1st (Early), April 10th (Regular), May 1st (Late)

“The Academy’s Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting is an international screenwriting competition established to identify and encourage talented new screenwriters. Up to five $35,000 Fellowships are awarded annually”


  • Slamdance 2013 Screenwriting Competition presented by JuntoBox Films

2013 Deadline(s): March 25th (Early), May 13th (Regular), June 25th (Late)

The Slamdance Screenwriting and Teleplay Competition is dedicated to discovering and supporting emerging writing talent. To that end, we are unveiling an exciting new partnership this year with JuntoBox Films who will be awarding a Grand Prize of $10,000 cash and a $50,000 production grant to the winning feature script. JuntoBox Films’ goal of producing films and finding writers with innovative and interesting stories is a great fit with what Slamdance strives to achieve. “


  • Film Independent Screenwriting Lab

2013 Deadline(s): April 1st

“Film Independent’s Screenwriting Lab is an intensive five-week program that runs two to three evenings a week in Los Angeles in September and October. The Lab is designed to help screenwriters improve their craft, develop their voices as writers, and take their current scripts to the next level. During the Lab, Fellows receive feedback on their scripts from the Lab Mentor, outside advisors, and the other writers in the program.


  • Urbanworld Film Festival Screenplay Competition 

2013 Deadline(s): April 30th (Early), May 24th (Regular), June 3 (Late)

“screenplay competition specifically for filmmakers of color with the 5 finalists presenting staged readings during the festival” 


  • Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab 

2013 Deadline: May 1st (Application opens Feb. 15th)

“A five-day workshop for developing scripts held twice a year in January and June. Those chosen to participate develop their films under the concentrated guidance of veteran filmmakers and actors”  


  • Austin Film Festival Screenplay and Teleplay Contest 

2013 Deadline(s): Screenplay – May 1st (Early), June 1st (Late); Teleplay – June 1st

2013 Deadlines: TBA (2012 Deadline: October 2012)

“Tribeca All Access seeks feature-length narrative and documentary submissions from established and emerging filmmakers whose team includes a director or screenwriter from a community that is traditionally under-represented in the film industry. Five narrative filmmakers and five documentary filmmakers will each receive a grant of $10,000 to use towards the development, production, post- production, or marketing of their film project”
