2013 Emmy Noms prove Netflix is changing TV

After a quick glance at today’s Emmy nominations, I think we can all admit the line between film and TV is practically nonexistent. Netflix’s “House of Cards” (David Fincher, Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and the show itself ) and “Arrested Development” (Jason Bateman) both got love from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Hmmm, I wonder if having the entire season of a show available at once is going to be the new standard for online TV?

More than a diversity hire: WGAW’s Female Asian Comedy Writers Panel notes

asian-women-13

(Photo from wga.org)

Have you checked out the Writers Guild of America, West Youtube channel lately? I stumbled upon a great panel called “Bring The Funny: Celebrating Asian Women Writers”. Although I’m all about shouting out Brown Women filmmakers, I can’t say that I’m too familiar with today’s female scribes working on the small screen (aside from Shonda Rhimes and Mindy Kaling). So I grabbed a pen and took a few notes that I wanted to share. I think most of the advice from these successful women could apply to both aspiring TV and film professionals.

Parks and Recreation (2009 – )

This past Sunday Aubrey Plaza pulled a Kanye at the MTV Movie Awards as Will Ferrell was accepting his award. Read the full story here.

Let’s hope this doesn’t become a thing for promoting new stuff. We’re pretty much over it.

Dexter (Michael C. Hall)

Dexter (Michael C. Hall)

Dexter: Takes the law into his own hands

He’s a killer with an excuse who takes the law into his own hands. Though a popular show, it has lost its following over the years.

Henry Mesner: No empathy means holding a knife to his mother at just 10 years old

Creepiest kid on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit by far. He’s scary because he’s a psychopath at just 10 years old. No empathy and no remorse. One of the best episodes of this season, by far.

Joe Carroll (James Purefoy)

Joe Carroll: uses his charisma as a weapon.

It’s so scary to think how one person can have such an immense influence on a large number of people–crazy psychopaths who are willing to kill for him.

Protagonistas: Rick Grimes

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln)

Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln)

Rick Grimes: Would he be the dominant archetype in a world with no zombies?

He’s the leader with the weight of this insane zombie world on his shoulders. You can’t blame him for going crazy once in a while.

I won’t say much more because I’m not caught up with the last few episodes of this season (gasp!)… but I’m guessing Rick is still leading the group?

Protagonistas: Walter White AKA Mr. White (Bryan Cranston)

Mr. White

Mr. White

Walter White – An underachieving HS Chemistry teacher gone rogue…

You either can’t bring yourself to hate the guy or you love to hate him. I’m excited for the next half of season 5, which is really just season 6.

Guillermo Diaz

Guillermo Diaz

Half Baked (1998)

Scandal (2012 – )

Guillermo Díaz used hiding his homosexuality in his rough upbringing to channel his acting capabilities.

This guy is full of surprises – Latino, openly gay, and grew up in Washington Heights!  I absolutely love him in Scandal!

Finding Nemo (2003)

Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2003 – )

A strong advocate for equality everywhere, she wasn’t afraid to address her “haters” on being a spokeswoman for JCP.

In early 2012, Ellen received a lot of beef for becoming the spokeswoman for JC Penney. A group called One Million Moms created a protest to have JC Penney fire Ellen. Obviously, JC Penney execs are moral human beings and did not fire her. Here’s Ellen’s response to her haters.

Neil Patrick Harris

The loveable Barney. He sleeps around (200+ women) and is a complete jerk to females, and yet we can’t get enough of him on HIMYM. So really, we love to love him. He proves you can play a straight role regardless of your personal life.

“The Neighbors” creator also wrote Crazy, Stupid, Love. and Bolt and Cars and Tangled. Weird, huh?

What I love about “The Neighbors” is that it disguises itself as a ghastly, corny ABC comedy about your typical white family living next to aliens. But it’s really a genius show that satirizes and endlessly criticizes American society as a whole. And that has me tuning in every week.

The writer of The Following is also the writer of ScreamScream 2, and Scream 4.

Say what you want about Scream, but it’s actually an insanely clever script. And The Following further proves Williamson’s talent. Are you watching the show? FOX, Mondays @ 9.

I’m guessing the CW will increase their ratings this summer with the comeback of America’s favorite comedians (or at least within the context of “Whose Line is it Anyway?”). Continue reading

QUEUE IT UP: Jane Campion’s “Top of the Lake” Episode 1 Now Free On iTunes

top-of-the-lake

“A detective investigates the disappearance of a 12-year-old pregnant daughter of a local drug lord.” Starring Elisabeth Moss, Cohen Holloway and Holly Hunter.

Looks like we can all catch a sneak peek of Jane Campion’s new mini-series before the official March 18th broadcast premiere on Sundance Channel. Watch the first hour of the six-episode mini-series on iTunes now. The show was featured at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in a one-day only, six-hour screening that I unfortunately could not make. The trailer caught my eye and I’m intrigued by film directors crossing over to television like David Fincher (“House of Cards” on Netflix) and now Campion.
